Dealing with uncertainty in engineering design for large-scale slopes

  邓汉忠教授拥有美国麻省理工学院学士和硕士学位及史丹福大学博士学位,于美国依利诺香槟大学任教二十七年,其后于1996年返回香港出任香港科技大学土木工程学系系主任。30多年来邓教授致力于土木基建工程尤其是岩土工程的概率方法、风险和可靠度的研究和工程应用。邓教授是美国土木工程师协会荣誉院士、香港工程科学院院士和Guggenheim 院士,在其专业领域内,领导多个国际委员会、本地专业学会及政府委员会。2004年被美国离岸能源中心选为“殿堂级技术拓荒者”。发表学术论文超过二百篇。他与洪华生教授合著的《工程规划与设计中的概率概念》一书被多所顶尖大学采用为教材,并被翻译成多种语言。

Professor Wilson Tang graduated obtained BS and MS degrees from M.I.T. and Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1969. He subsequently began his academic career at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and became Professor of Civil Engineering in 1980 and Associate Head of the Department in 1989. During his sabbatical leaves, Professor Tang has served as Visiting Professor at National Singapore University and Guggenheim Fellow at the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute and Imperial College in London. Professor Tang returned to Hong Kong and Headed the Department of Civil Engineering at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) from 1996 to 2001.

For over 30 years Professor Tang has been widely respected for his work in the field of risk, reliability, and decision analysis. He is especially renowned for his expertise in geotechnical applications, with particular regard to landslides and both onshore and offshore foundations. His two widely cited co-authored texts, on probability concepts in engineering planning and design, have been translated into several languages.

Professor Tang was a member of the Geotechnical Board at the US National Academy of Sciences and chaired the NRC committee on reliability methods for risk mitigation in geotechnical engineering. He is a fellow of ASCE. He has chaired and vice-chaired technical committees in ASCE and ISSMGE. He is a member of the Executive Board of International Association of Structural Safety and Reliability as well as editorial board member of Structural Safety and several other international journals.  In recognition of his accomplishments in the reliability-based design of offshore structures, Professor Tang has been elected to the Offshore Energy Center’s Hall of Fame. He was also awarded Honorary Professor in two universities in China. He was recently elected as honorary member of ASCE.
