Since the First teaching laboratory was founded, there have been great changes and developments. Especially since reform and the open policy were adopted, and throughout the Seventh and Eighth Five-year Plans, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) has adjusted, merged, restored and developed some of the specialties, the laboratory scale has been enlarged, comprehensive strength has-been reinforced, and the general standard has been promoted. All this provides forceful support for teaching, scientific research, specialty building and social services. At present, SJTU has altogether 85 labs of various kinds, including 4 state key labs, 2 high-tech network labs of National "863"Project, 4 key labs of the State Education Ministry, 2 National Engineering Research Center. Besides, in SJTU there are 16 state key subjects, 9 Shanghai key subjects, a group of labs for basic courses and basic technological courses, and some central labs of the university. SJTU has built a campus computer net and it is the net center of Shanghai, Fujian, Zhejiang and Jiangxi Provinces which belongs to the China Education and Scientific Research Computer Net under construction. The total value of instruments and equipment for teaching and scientific research amounts to RMB753.36 million, and the value of large precision instruments and equipment, each piece worth over RMB100,000, amounts to more than RMB358.17 million. The total area for laboratory is 89,767m2. There are 700 engineering experiment technicians, including 230 people with Senior Professional titles, 230 people with intermediate professional titles. They undertake 416 kinds of experiment courses, altogether 1329 items. They also help teachers supervise undergraduates and postgraduates Experiments for their graduation dissertations, participate scientific research and serve society directly with the aid of advanced experimental instruments and technology. Therefore, they have made due contributions. SJTU is one of universities which earliest realized the computerized management of instruments and equipment due to the complete management system and a complete and standard set of regulations. It continues to explore both in theory and in practice and strives to make the laboratory construction and management level rank among the advanced colleges and universities in China. According to of SJTU strategic development objectives of the 21st century and the overall plan of 211 Project, laboratory construction shoulders heavy responsibilities. We believe if only we stick to reform and renovation, pioneer with painstaking efforts and emphasize on efficiency and standard improvement, laboratories can be turned into a teaching base for trailing first-class personnel, a scientific research base for making outstanding achievements, a subject construction base for improving the overall standard and social service base for directly taking part in socialist economic construction.
