With the construction of the first two phases of project since late 1994, SJTUnet (Shanghai Jiao Tong University network) has developped into a significant, large-scale and advanced campus network among nation-wide colleges and universities. Five campuses of SJTU, namely Xuhui, Minhang, Shang Zhong Road, Qi Bao and Fa Hua Zhen are connected by the above net.

As an important sub-project of basic facilities construction for education in "211 Project", an educational plan, the second phase of the project is financed with key funds by both the Government and SJTU, expanding the net from two campuses--Xuhui and Fa Hua Zhen--to all the five campuses. At present, the second phase has basically completed. On the basis of the investment of approximate 2,000,000 yuan in the first two phases, SJTU continues to invest in constructing internal PDS (Premises Distribution System), including both old dormitories and new apartments for students, so that it is convenient for all the staff and students to login the net. Centering in the campus of Xuhui, SJTU net connects other four campuses through 31-kilometer-long single-mode optical cabel and 33-kilometer-long mixed cable with both single and multiple modes. The mainline net covers almost all buildings in the five campus of SJTU, of which most are buildings for teaching, experiment, administration and apartments for some students and staff.

The speed of mainline net between campuses of Xuhui and Min Hang is 10 Gbps while among other campuses could be connected conveniently through PDS and exchanges within bulidings. Meanwhile, the net is equipped with dialing service system, which enables users to login the net through telephone line. In addition, the Network Information Center could offer such INTERNET services as e-mail, file transfer and electronic bulletin board, etc. There are so far 8,000 computers connected to the net, more than 50,000 e-mail users and over 200 dialing users.

The construction of SJTU net has provided better basic conditions for teaching, scientific research and management, which means most teachers and students could obtain the latest information at the highest speed, both domestic and foreign academic exchanges could be conducted conveniently and work efficiency would be greatly improved so as to lay a solid foundation to management modernization.

As one of the eight regional centers of CERNET (China's Education and Research Net)----the center of China's Southeast net and SHERNET (Shanghai Education and Research Net), the Network Information Center in SJTU undertakes the task of linking more than 200 universities and colleges and a large number of middle schools and prelimitary schools in Zhejiang province, Fujian province, Jiangxi province and Shanghai to CERNET. At the same time, the center would ensure the technique of net construction and operation. The advanced, solid and convevient net would play an important role in turning out excellent students and setting up first-rate universities.
